Transformer Selection Parameters for Malaysia


When selecting transformers for Malaysia, the following parameters shall be taken into consideration.

For industrial and power‑construction projects in Malaysia, transformer selection must adapt to local power‑grid conditions, climate and regulatory requirements. Key parameters directly determine equipment stability, regulatory compliance and service life.

Power‑grid Adaptation Parameters

Strict compliance with local grid specifications is required: the standard low‑voltage grid is 415 V / 50 Hz (380 V conversion is needed for industrial applications). TNB mandates the Dyn11 connection group as a rigid grid‑connection requirement. Tap‑changer positions shall be set at 415 V ±5 % to cope with voltage fluctuations.

Insulation and Protection Class

Adapt to tropical high‑temperature, high‑humidity and dusty climates:

Indoor application: Class‑F insulation (temperature resistance 155 °C) plus IP23 protection degree.

Outdoor and dusty workshop application: upgrade to Class‑H insulation plus IP54 protection degree, together with VPI vacuum pressure impregnation process to prevent equipment failures.

Capacity Calculation and Safety Margin

Calculate capacity based on total equipment power, combined with power factor and 0.8 load factor. A 20 % safety margin shall be reserved to avoid overload and accommodate multi‑scenario operation and future capacity expansion.

Compliance and Certification Requirements

SIRIM certification is mandatory for market access. CE certification and IEC test reports shall also be provided. Nameplates shall be marked in English to facilitate customs clearance and grid‑connection acceptance.

Winding Material and Safety Performance

Winding materials shall be selected according to operating conditions:

Copper‑wound transformers are preferred for continuous‑production lines, with a service life of no less than 25 years.

Aluminium‑wound transformers may be adopted for short‑term operation to control costs.

Isolation‑type transformers shall be adopted, equipped with lightning and surge protection to suit local lightning‑prone conditions.
